Galilee Catholic Parish

Galilee Catholic Community is part of the local Catholic Church’s vision for family centered church. It is a place where families, school, church and other agencies will work together to celebrate life as a learning community.

A brief history

Aldinga Catholic Community began to celebrate Mass in the Butterworth Rd kindergarten in the early 1980’s, with Parishioners seated on Kindy chairs. Building of the first Galilee Church on Quinliven Rd Aldinga Beach, commenced on 1st September 1984. It was originally built by the Lutheran Community of Aldinga/Pt Willunga and opened on the 20th January 1985 by Dr. C.I. Koch. The Catholic Community accepted an invitation from the Lutheran Community to use the Galilee Church and Mass was celebrated there from the late 1980’s to 2006.

Early in 2002 negotiations began to purchase the building as it was becoming a financial burden for the owners. The Church was transferred to the Willunga Catholic Parish on October 1st, 2002. It was dedicated by the most Rev. Philip Wilson, Archbishop of Adelaide, on 17th April 2004. The Lutheran Community continued to share the buildings as they do the Galilee space to this day.

When dedicated, the Church was renamed Mary of Galilee, The First Disciple. Parishioners were asked for suggestions for the name, with most being clear that “Galilee” remain in the title in respect for the connection with the Lutheran Community and the characteristics of the area.In 2006 the building was sold so the Galilee site could be developed for both school and Church-the stage in the Catholic presence in Aldinga and on ongoing link with our history through the “Galilee” name. December 2008

The Willunga Catholic Parish is working in partnership with Catholic Education SA to establish the community centre and school. The vision is to build a contemporary learning centre so that the needs of families in worship, education and community will be met. Plans are in place for other community services to become available as the project progresses. Currently Outreach Services include Centacare, St Vincent De Paul and a community Op-Shop.

Fr Charles Gauci is our parish priest. Fr Charles is supported by Fr Alfred Farrugia and Fr Tom Gleeson. We are very fortunate to have Sr Margaret Ann Connolly as a parish worker. Sr Margaret Ann works with the school and parish to support families in our community.
